Dyna Weslyn was the standout of the Silver Collars leading all the way in the faster of the two heats held at Manukau on Sunday, 2 June. She lead up in 18.47 – almost .20 seconds faster than the quickest in the second heat. (For the extreme distance races, the opening sectionals is from the boxes to the finishing post the first time around.)
To understand how dominant her opening sectional was, the third best of all runners was over 4 lengths slower while the fourth best was 8 lengths slower.
As the sectionals show, while she didn’t extend her lead in the middle sectional, her time of time of 11.62 for the middle sectional was the third best and less than .04 of a second behind the best middle sectional run by Vandagambo.
Her closing sectional is not the strongest but with the dominance she had, her win was never in doubt. Vandagambo ran the second best closing sectional after Eddy Ripper who simply got too far back. Bigtime Chloe stormed home, repeating a performance commentator Mark Rosanowski had spotted recently at Palmerston North.
The final is on Sunday 9 June and should be a great race. Dyna Weslyn simply needs to get a clear start and if she was to repeat her sectional times she should be hard to beat. Perhaps the greatest danger is Vandagambo but he doesn’t appear to have the early brilliance out of the boxes that Dyna Weslyn has.
